Drunk and singing in some anonymous bar. Truck abandoned, arm around my girl. Too drunk to drive or care. Walking to her place after closing time. Pause to make out under freeway offramp. 24 hour burrito place, sitting outside looking up at the full moon at four AM eating carne asada and talking about moving in together and laughing.
Smashed hand in class. Platform coming down on top of it like a hammer. Saw it coming and couldn't do a damn thing. Some of the worst pain I ever felt. Lucky I didn't break. Tiffanys' fault, in a way. She was spotting it going up and grabbed it too late when it fell. Bought me a bottle to say she was sorry. Drank it with her in the shop after hours, playing darts and laughing. Bandages wrapped around my left hand. Bashed my shin on a sawhorse so bad I limped for a week after.
Company wrapped up Macbeth. Played poker at the cast party. Came down to me and her and a friend of mine. Went all in on a pair of tens and lost to pocket aces. Smoked a pack over five hours of party.
Romeo and Juliet. Biggest hit the company ever had. Packed house, nightly. Beautiful show. Had an opera singer come in before each and every showing to sing a sad song. Name of Maile. Beautiful voice. Smoked like a chimney and told me I made a good vodka redbull, and maybe I did. Could have but never did make a move. Thought long and hard about it though. Think Tiffany may have seen that I did. First real fight at the cast party. Told her I wasn't sure about us. She cried. I was an asshole and left. Walked home in the middle of the night ignoring my phone ringing. Turned it off.
Made up the next day. Blamed alcohol. Got pretty tore up about it. First time since Lisa I'd raised my voice in anger. Friends called to make sure I was okay and to tell me I was scary when I was half-blind drunk and angry and shouting. Didn't much like hearing that. Went out to brunch and made nice. Smiled when I wanted to say I still wasn't sure.
Broke my ankle six weeks later, falling down stairs at a cast party, slipping in beer. Laughed because it was all I could do.
Ended up at my parents house, high out of my mind on painkillers, and ignoring her voice mails.
